Our 2026 Tree Planting
Growing Beyond Pedra Fina
On 17 January 2026, we returned to Pedra Fina, in São Torcato, for our third tree planting event. Organized with Laboratório da Paisagem and the Municipality of Guimarães, the day brought together businesses, students, local institutions and families to take part in the restoration of this former quarry.
Together, we planted 800 trees that morning. But the work extended beyond a single day and a single site.
2,149 trees for Guimarães
With the support of 24 companies, a parish council, a school group and Vitória Sport Clube, the 2026 initiative received 2,149 donated trees. Of these, 1,132 were allocated to Pedra Fina, completing the planned reforestation of the site and replacing 132 trees from the previous planting that had not survived.
The remaining trees were allocated to other areas of Guimarães, including the banks of Ribeira da Canhota in Caldelas and leisure parks in Barco, Prazins Santa Eufémia and Infantas. The project also includes a further planting planned for the Enchanted Forest.
Planting is only the beginning
Monitoring is an essential part of restoring a forest. The December 2025 assessment found that 89.44% of the trees planted at Pedra Fina in 2025 had survived. The 2026 work built on that result by replacing losses and completing the planting at the site. The next step is to keep monitoring how the new trees develop.
Part of Guimarães Mais Floresta, this year’s initiative was also included in the programme for Guimarães’ year as European Green Capital. For us, its value lies in the continuity of the work and in the people willing to do it together.
